If you're looking to give your pop-up camper a new lease of life, reupholstering your cushions is a great place to start. You can opt for a simple no-sew method or go all out and make your own cushion covers.
No-Sew Method
If you don't have a sewing machine or would prefer a quicker option, you can reupholster your cushions using fabric, hardboard and staples. You'll need to cut the hardboard to size, leaving a 1-inch margin around your foam cushion. Then, lay your fabric face down, place the foam in the centre, and position the hardboard on top. Pull the fabric tight and staple it to the hardboard, working from the centre outwards. Repeat this process for the other sides, leaving the corners until last. For the corners, you'll need to create a tidy, straight pleat by folding and stapling the excess fabric.
Sewn Cushion Covers
If you're feeling more ambitious, you can make new cushion covers from scratch. Start by taking your old cushion covers apart to use as a pattern. Measure the length, width and depth of your cushions and add a seam allowance (usually around 1/2 to 1 inch) to each measurement. Cut out your fabric pieces accordingly, taking care to account for any curves or unusual shapes. Sew the pieces together, leaving one side open to insert the cushion. You can add zippers or buttons for a more secure closure, or simply sew the final side shut.

What You'll Learn
Choosing the right fabric
- Durability: Select a fabric that is sturdy and long-lasting. Upholstery fabric or home décor fabric is a good option, as it is designed for everyday use and can withstand wear and tear.
- Ease of Cleaning: Look for fabrics that are easy to clean and maintain. Some fabrics may be machine washable, while others may require spot cleaning. Consider the activities you'll be doing in your camper and choose a fabric that can handle potential stains and spills.
- Water Resistance: Opt for fabrics that are water-resistant or waterproof, especially if you plan to camp in wet weather conditions. This will help keep your cushions dry and prevent mould or mildew.
- Colour and Pattern: Choose a colour and pattern that complement your camper's interior design. Lighter colours may show dirt more easily, but they can also brighten up the space. Consider a pattern that disguises stains while adding visual interest.
- Amount Required: Measure your cushions carefully and calculate the amount of fabric needed. Take into account any patterns or designs you wish to incorporate, as this may require additional fabric. It is always better to have a little extra fabric than to run short.
- Price: Fabric prices can vary widely. Consider your budget and whether you want to splurge on a particular fabric or look for discounts and sales.
- Personal Preference: Ultimately, choose a fabric that you like and that reflects your style. It is your pop-up camper, so select a fabric that makes you happy and creates a comfortable space for you to enjoy.

Measuring and cutting the fabric
The first step in making cushions for your pop-up camper is to measure the existing cushions and cut the fabric accordingly. This process may vary depending on the style and size of your cushions, but here are some general guidelines to follow:
- Start by removing the old cushion covers and measuring the length, width, and height of each cushion. It is important to add a seam allowance of approximately 1-2 inches to your measurements to ensure a proper fit.
- Determine the amount of fabric needed based on the size of your cushions. Consider the width of the fabric bolts and whether you want matching or contrasting fabric for the cushion backs.
- Lay out your fabric on a flat surface, wrong side up. Place the cushion in the centre, and fold the fabric over the cushion, allowing for overlap. Ensure the shorter fold is on the inside, as this will be the outside once the cover is complete.
- Hem the ends of the fabric and pin the flap in place. Then, sew down one side, insert the cushion, and measure for the hem on the other side.
- For curved cushions, consider creating a pattern piece by tracing the shape onto scrap fabric and adding a seam allowance. Cut out the pattern piece and use it to cut the fabric for the curved cushions.
- When measuring and cutting fabric for rectangular cushions, take measurements and calculate the amount of fabric needed. Ensure you have enough fabric to wrap around the sides of the cushions and create a pocket for the cushion insert.
- Consider making a prototype or practice cover using inexpensive fabric to perfect your measurements and cutting technique before cutting into your final fabric.
Remember to allow for some flexibility in your measurements, as you may need to adjust based on the specific style and shape of your cushions. Always measure twice and cut once to avoid wasting fabric!

Sewing the fabric
Measure and Cut the Fabric
Before cutting your fabric, it is important to measure your cushions accurately. You will need to measure the length, width, and depth of each cushion. Add about 1-2 inches to each measurement to allow for seam allowances and a snug fit.
Once you have your measurements, cut out the fabric pieces accordingly. You will need a front piece, a back piece, and side pieces (also known as boxing strips). If your cushions have curved edges, you may need to create a pattern piece by tracing the curve and adding a seam allowance.
Create a Prototype (Optional)
Consider making a prototype using inexpensive fabric to ensure your measurements are correct and the covers fit well. This will allow you to make any necessary adjustments before cutting into your final fabric.
Prepare the Zipper (Optional)
If you plan to include zippers in your cushion covers, now is the time to install them. Cut your zippers to the appropriate length, and follow a tutorial or pattern for installing zippers in cushion covers.
Sew the Piping (Optional)
If you want to add piping to your cushions, cut strips of fabric on the bias and use a tutorial to create your own piping. Sew the piping to the right side of your fabric, along the edges of the front piece.
Sew the Cushion Covers
With right sides together, sew the boxing strips to the front piece, taking care to match the side seams. Then, sew the back piece to the other side of the boxing strips, leaving an opening for inserting the cushion.
Finish the Corners
The corners can be a bit tricky, but with careful folding and stitching, you will achieve a neat finish. Flatten out one side of the fabric and fold the excess fabric to create a straight crease. Staple or pin it in place, then repeat on the other side, creating a tidy pleat. Sew along the crease to secure the corners.
Insert the Cushions
Turn your covers right side out and insert the cushions. If your cushions have wooden backing, you may need to slide the fabric over the cushion and wooden piece together before securing the opening.
Secure the Opening
You can secure the opening of your cushion covers in several ways. You can staple the fabric to the wooden backing, add buttons, use safety pins, or attach Velcro for a more finished look.
Your pop-up camper cushions are now complete! Enjoy your handiwork and the comfort of your new cushions during your next camping trip!

Adding zippers
Step 1: Measure and Cut Fabric
Measure the dimensions of your cushion, including the depth of the sides. Add 1/2 inch to each measurement to allow for a seam allowance. Cut out the fabric pieces for the top and bottom of the cushion, as well as the pieces for the sides. If your cushion has curved edges, create a pattern piece by laying a piece of scrap fabric over the cushion and tracing the edges, then cut out the pattern piece with a 1/2-inch seam allowance.
Step 2: Prepare the Zipper
Cut a strip of fabric for the zipper panel, making it 1 inch wider than the depth of your cushion and long enough to go around one side of the cushion. Fold the strip in half, wrong sides together, and line up the centre with the centre of your zipper. Sew the zipper in place using a straight stitch or a zipper foot if you have one. Repeat this process to attach the zipper to the other side of the zipper panel. Install a slider onto the zipper, following the instructions on the package.
Step 3: Attach Zipper Panel to Side Piece
Pin the zipper panel to one of the side pieces of your cushion, matching the centre of the zipper panel to the centre of one long side. Sew the zipper panel to the side piece, clipping the corners to help them go around the cushion smoothly.
Step 4: Join Side Pieces
If your side piece is too long, cut away the excess, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Sew the two ends of the side piece together to create a loop that fits around the cushion.
Step 5: Attach Remaining Side Pieces
Pin and sew the remaining side pieces to the zipper panel/side piece combination. You may want to add piping to the cushion side panels before sewing them together for a more professional look. Clip the corners of the piping to help it go around the corners smoothly.
Step 6: Attach Top and Bottom Pieces
Pin and sew the top and bottom pieces to the side pieces, starting from the large side panel and working your way around. Turn the cover right side out and place it over the cushion to ensure a snug fit.
Step 7: Finish the Zipper
Zip up the cover and sew along the remaining edge to finish the cover. Use heavy-duty thread and a sharp seam ripper to ensure a durable finish.

Inserting the cushion
Now that you have your cushion covers ready, it is time to insert the cushions. If you are using new foam, you can skip this step. If you are reusing your old foam, give it a good clean and let it dry completely before proceeding.
If your foam is stained but still in good condition, you can wrap it in plastic before inserting it into the new cover. This will help protect your new covers and keep them looking fresh for longer. Wrapping the foam in batting will also help fill out the cover and give it a nice, plush look. However, batting can be tricky to work with, so you may want to wrap the foam in cheap fabric first to help it slide into the cover more smoothly.
Once your foam is ready, simply slide it into your new cover, adjust it to your liking, and you're done! If you opted for a zipper closure, remember to zip it closed before enjoying your newly upholstered camper cushions.
If you chose to go with the no-sew method and stapled your fabric to a hardboard backing, inserting the cushion is a little different. Place your foam on top of the fabric, centring it on the board. Pull the fabric tight and staple it to the board, working your way around the cushion. For the corners, flatten out one side of the fabric and fold the excess fabric to create a tidy, straight crease. Staple it in place, then repeat on the other side, creating a tidy pleat.
