Bus routes are divided into fare zones, and the number of zones on your ticket must match the number of zones you travel through. Your ticket must also be "interstate" for trips crossing state lines. The number of zones in your trip can be found by consulting the route's schedule or the trip planner.
If you are transferring between two bus trip legs within New Jersey, you can purchase separate tickets for each leg. Alternatively, you can purchase a transfer ticket on board, saving $0.95-$1.00 on your trip. Transfers are not issued or accepted for interstate trips.
If you are transferring from a bus route to light rail, you can purchase a transfer ticket when boarding the bus. Transfer tickets remain valid for two hours after purchase.

Paying with a commuter benefit card
Commuter benefit cards are a great way to save money on your daily commute. You can use them to purchase tickets and passes for NJ Transit bus routes, including the No. 123 bus. Here's what you need to know about using a commuter benefit card for your bus fare:
Where to Use Commuter Benefit Cards
Commuter benefit cards can be used to purchase tickets and passes at all rail ticket windows, designated bus ticket windows, and ticket vending machines. This includes the No. 123 bus route, which is an extension of the No. 123 bus service in Jersey City. The cards are also accepted by the Quik-Tik/Mail-Fare/Mail-Tik programs.
Combining Payment Methods
For sales at ticket windows equipped with Ticket Office Machines (TOMs), you can combine the use of your commuter benefit card with other payment methods. This includes cash, personal or corporate checks, transit benefits checks, credit cards, or debit cards.
Obtaining a Commuter Benefit Card
Commuter benefit cards are obtained through your employer. These cards are provided to employees as a benefit and can be used to purchase tickets and passes for various transit options, including the NJ Transit bus system.
Using the Card
When using your commuter benefit card at a ticket vending machine, simply follow the same procedures you would for a credit or debit card. Remember to select "Credit" instead of "Debit/ATM" when making your purchase. The amount will be deducted from your commuter benefit card balance.
Eligible and Ineligible Expenses
You can use your commuter benefit card to purchase transit fare media for buses, subways, trains, and ferries. However, ineligible expenses include gas, tolls, and parking.
Card Rejection
There are a few reasons why your commuter benefit card may be rejected at a vending machine or ticket window. This could be due to insufficient funds, attempting to purchase from an ineligible merchant, selecting "Debit" instead of "Credit," or a temporary network problem.
By following these guidelines, you can conveniently use your commuter benefit card to pay for your NJ Transit bus fare, including the No. 123 bus route, and take advantage of the cost-saving benefits of this payment method.
