BYU students, staff, spouses and dependents can ride UTA buses for free

Free UTA Bus Travel for BYU Students, Staff, Spouses, and Dependents

Students, staff, spouses, and dependents of BYU can ride UTA buses for free. This includes local and express buses, UVX, FrontRunner, TRAX, the S-Line, Flex Routes, and On Demand. To access this free travel, you must “tap on and off" each vehicle with your physical BYU ID card. The BYU app ID card does not work for UTA travel, as it cannot read the chip in the card.

It can take up to 48 hours for a new card to be activated for UTA travel, so be prepared to pay with another fare method during this time. If your card is not working after 48 hours, bring it to the ID Center, 1057 WSC, 801-422-5082.

It is important to note that the BYU ID does not work on ski buses, the Park City Connect, or Paratransit vehicles. Additionally, the UTA pass will stop working when you are no longer eligible, such as when your student or employment status ends.

Eligibility

To be eligible for free UTA rides as a BYU student, you must be registered for "for-credit" on-campus classes. This includes Post Baccalaureate, ELC, Concurrent Enrollment, Visiting Students, SLC, and Evening Classes students. If you register for Independent Study classes, audit classes, withdraw, or are marked as a no-show for a credit class, you will not be eligible.

For spouses and dependents of BYU students and staff, ID cards can be obtained by following the instructions on the Spouse and Dependent ID cards page.

UVU students, faculty and staff can ride UTA buses for free

UVU students, faculty, and staff: ride UTA buses for free

Utah Valley University (UVU) students, current faculty, and staff are eligible for free UTA bus passes with their UVU ID Card. This includes use of the new Utah Valley Express (UVX) line in Orem and Provo.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a free UTA bus pass, UVU students must be registered for a minimum of one credit hour for the current semester. If classes are dropped, the UTA pass will be deactivated. The pass is for the cardholder only and cannot be used by another person.

Activation

The UTA pass should automatically activate five days before the active semester and will stop working the day after the end of the semester if you are not registered for classes for the next term.

If you have a OneCard or UCCU PlusCard that does not have prior door access, you may need to bring it to Campus Connection for UTA activation. It will take approximately 48 hours before the pass is working.

Using the UTA pass

To ride, tap your UVU ID card against the card reader at the station. After the green light flashes, you can board. Remember to tap your ID against the card reader at your destination to tap off.

Enter and exit the bus through the second or third set of doors. Riders do not need to request stops with the pull cord. The UVX stops at each station every time.

Dependents and spouses

Dependents and spouses of UVU students and current employees are also eligible to receive free UTA passes. Children between the ages of 6-24 who live with the student or employee qualify as dependents. Children 5 and under ride free with a fare-paying adult. Dependents must be registered online prior to receiving their ID.

Students must be registered for a minimum of one credit hour to be eligible for a free UTA pass

Students at the University of Texas at Austin can ride CapMetro buses for free by swiping their valid UT student IDs. This includes routes both within and outside the campus area. Students at Utah Valley University are also eligible to receive free UTA passes with their UVU ID Card, but they must be registered for a minimum of one credit hour for the current semester. Similarly, at Brigham Young University, eligible students with a BYU ID card can get free rides on local and express buses, UVX, FrontRunner, TRAX, the S-Line, Flex Routes, and On Demand.

At Utah Valley University, the UVU ID card must be tapped against the card reader at the station. A green light indicates that the student can board the bus. It is important to remember to tap the ID card again at the destination to tap off. The pass is only valid for the cardholder and cannot be used by another person. If a student drops their classes, the UTA pass will be deactivated. The pass will also stop working the day after the end of the semester if the student is not registered for classes for the next term.

At Brigham Young University, the BYU ID card works similarly to the UVU ID card at Utah Valley University. The BYU ID card contains a chip that is read by the UTA system to allow free rides. It is important to note that the BYU app ID card cannot be used for UTA rides. Additionally, the BYU ID card does not work on ski buses, the Park City Connect, or Paratransit vehicles.

The BYU ID does not work on ski buses, Park City Connect or Paratransit vehicles

The BYU ID is a powerful tool that offers free rides on various transit options for eligible students, employees, spouses, and dependents. This includes access to local and express buses, UVX, FrontRunner, TRAX, the S-Line, Flex Routes, and On Demand services. However, it's important to note that the BYU ID has certain limitations.

While the BYU ID provides extensive benefits for its holders, there are specific instances where it cannot be used. Notably, the BYU ID does not work on ski buses, Park City Connect or Paratransit vehicles. These services are not included in the free transit offerings provided by BYU.

Ski buses are separate from the regular bus services and often operate during specific seasons or periods. They cater to individuals looking to travel to ski resorts or winter recreational areas. Park City Connect, on the other hand, offers transportation services specifically tailored for Park City and its surrounding areas. Paratransit vehicles, as the name suggests, are specialised transportation options for individuals with disabilities or special needs.

It is important for BYU ID holders to be aware of these limitations and plan their travels accordingly. When using ski buses, Park City Connect, or Paratransit vehicles, alternative payment methods or passes may be required. It is recommended to check the official websites or contact the respective transportation providers for detailed information on fares and accepted payment methods for these specific services.

Additionally, it is worth mentioning that the BYU ID card must be in good condition to function properly. Damaging the card, such as punching a hole in it, will render it unusable for accessing these transit benefits. In case of a non-functional card, individuals can reach out to the BYU ID Center for assistance and further guidance.
